Since first opening its doors in April of 2015, the goal of the Proton Therapy Center at Ackerman Cancer Center was to provide patients access to the best radiation therapy possible. Just a few short years later, the center has done just that with the start of the their 1,000th patient.

Through the use of Proton Therapy, our physicians have witnessed better tolerance in patient treatments, excellent overall outcomes and healthier patients post treatment,” said Scot Ackerman, MD, Medical Director of Ackerman Cancer Center.
Proton therapy, a highly advanced form of radiation therapy, targets tumors with greater precision than traditional x-ray based radiotherapy and can reduce the amount of unnecessary radiation exposure to vulnerable healthy tissue and organs. This benefit has the potential to reduce side effects and lessen the risk of secondary malignancies.
Patients who have come to ACC from all over the United States, Canada and Central America have been treated for a variety of cancers including head and neck, breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and cancers of the central nervous system among many others.
While 1,000 patients is a major milestone for any proton therapy center, as the first compact single-room proton therapy center in the world to reach the milestone, it has special significance. “I believe that the combination of our technology, simple clinical workflow, system reliability and Mevion’s dedicated service team has helped Ackerman Cancer Center prove that a compact system is capable of providing proton therapy to large numbers of patients,” said Tina Yu, Chief Executive Officer of Mevion Medical Systems. “We congratulate the staff at Ackerman Cancer Center for reaching this achievement and our Mevion team is proud to know that our machine has helped improve the lives of so many patients.”
Following the core values of the practice, Ackerman Cancer Center will be expanding their proton offerings by adding a second Mevion system with HYPERSCAN Pencil Beam Scanning.
