What To Know

  • Dror Paley is a co-developer of The PRECICE™ Plate technology, which is designed for complex limb reconstruction, including procedures to treat limb-lengthening discrepancies resulting from congenital abnormalities, major fractures of the legs and arms, and shortened bones due to cancer or other diseases.
  • “It's an honor to be the first surgeon in the world to use this new device that will change the lives of many patients, and this marks another major breakthrough in limb lengthening treatment,” said Dr.

Dr. Dror Paley, medical director of the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center & Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, is the first surgeon in the world to perform a new procedure utilizing the new PRECICE™ Plating System, an all-internal remote-controlled limb lengthening device from NuVasive Specialized Orthopedics.

Dr. Dror Paley is a co-developer of The PRECICE™ Plate technology, which is designed for complex limb reconstruction, including procedures to treat limb-lengthening discrepancies resulting from congenital abnormalities, major fractures of the legs and arms, and shortened bones due to cancer or other diseases. The PRECICE™ Plate implant and surgical technique are mounted on the outside of the bone which is designed to avoid disturbance to the patient’s growth plates, which is especially important in younger, growing pediatric patients. The mounting location of the plate is also intended to present less risk to the bone’s blood supply.

“It’s an honor to be the first surgeon in the world to use this new device that will change the lives of many patients, and this marks another major breakthrough in limb lengthening treatment,” said Dr. Dror Paley, medical director of the Paley Orthopedic and Spine Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center & Palm Beach Children’s Hospital. “The benefits for recovery that our patients will experience is one the best rewards and the device will not only provide a less-invasive approach to limb lengthening procedures, but also significantly reduce the potential for complications–such as infections during healing and recovery.”

Specifically, the PRECICE™ Plate remote controlled device uses an internal implant, which is adjusted to lengthen the leg bones via non-invasive methods from outside the body. This is an improvement compared to traditional limb lengthening techniques which use an adjustable external fixation system which is attached to the leg bone through long-term openings in the skin. The major benefit of the PRECICE™ Plate, is surgeons like Dr. Paley can have more control over each patient’s limb lengthening rate, all in a less invasive way.

“We are honored to be the first hospital in the world to perform a limb lengthening procedure using the PRECICE™ Plate device, and we congratulate Dr. Paley on his significant accomplishment,” said Cynthia McCauley, chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Medical Center & Palm Beach Children’s Hospital. “We take great pride in St. Mary’s Medical Center’s leadership and expertise in the field of limb lengthening, and thank Dr. Paley for his dedication and commitment to providing some of the most advanced limb lengthening care to our patients, many of whom travel from around the world for his evaluation and treatment.”

Dr. Paley’s worldwide reputation and expertise extends equally to children and adults in the diagnosis and treatment of special orthopedic conditions including congenital limb deformities, post-traumatic limb conditions, bone healing problems, bone defects, skeletal dysplasias, metabolic disorders, foot deformities, peripheral nerve disorders and other miscellaneous developmental deformities.
