The center features a wide array of care to treat inflammatory bowel disease all under one roof, and has already attracted patients from across the country

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center

Northwell Health officially opened its new Center for Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care with a ribbon cutting on April 29. The 8,250-square-foot space is changing the way Northwell treats inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) across its 21-hospital network.

The Center for Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care is Northwell’s new home for advanced IBD care. The center, located at 125 Community Drive in Manhasset, has 13 exam rooms, two procedural rooms and six infusion bays. Since it started operations, people have travelled from all over the country – and as far away as Alaska – to receive high-quality care.

IBD is a term used to refer to disease that cause inflammation of the bowels, such as Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Symptoms of IBD can include abdominal pain, bleeding, fever, malnutrition and more. There are more than 2.3 million people in the US estimated to have IBD.

“Today signifies a transformative milestone as Northwell revolutionizes patient care for millions of Americans with IBD,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell. “This new center is changing the way IBD is treated, and people from across the country know they can count on Northwell to get the expert treatment they need.”
Founded under the direction of Feza Remzi, MD, an internationally recognized colorectal surgeon who specializes in the treatment of patients with IBD and other complex colorectal conditions, the IBD center houses a team of physicians, advanced clinical providers, dieticians and more, who coordinate to provide comprehensive care for patients – including pediatric patients, in collaboration with providers at Cohen’s Children Medical Center.

“From the first step inside the center, patients become family,” Dr. Remzi said. “Many arrive after enduring years of complex conditions, seeking reassurance and solutions. Our team embodies this ethos, understanding that we’re not just treating conditions, but individuals with unique challenges and aspirations.”

While standard IBD care is available at all Northwell hospitals, the Center for Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care brings care for advanced IBD under one roof, making it easier for patients to see multiple specialists to get the care they need. Since the center opened, outpatient procedures have increased nearly 600 percent, and the number of surgeries performed has almost doubled. The centralized nature of the center will also make it easier to perform clinical trials in the future.

“The Center for Advance Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care is more than just a medical practice – it’s a beacon of integrated care,” said John D’Angelo, MD, senior vice president and regional executive director for Northwell’s Central Region. “Northwell is revolutionizing the patient experience, offering multidisciplinary care that addresses every facet of chronic, organ-specific diseases. This isn’t just about surgery; it’s about holistic support, from nutritionists to behavioral health professionals, all under one roof. It’s a testament to our dedication to providing comprehensive, accessible healthcare right in our patients’ backyards.”

“This new center will be life-changing for so many patients,” said Gene Coppa, MD, senior vice president and executive director of surgical services at Northwell. “Dr. Remzi’s expertise allows us to treat these debilitating conditions like never before. The integration of care at the Center for Advanced Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care will set the standard for IBD care across the country allowing all of the unique conditions of these patients to be managed comprehensively.”
