Northwell Health cut the ribbon on two new medical imaging schools at its Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI) in New Hyde Park on Nov. 14. The new School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography – created with SUNY Empire State University as an academic partner – will teach the next generation of diagnostic medical sonographers. Additionally, Northwell’s Peconic Bay School of Radiologic Technology opened a second campus at CLI, doubling its class size.
Medical imaging is critical to diagnosis and treatment in almost all aspects of modern medicine. The two new schools are educating students in these fields to meet the growing demand for specialist technologists who use x-ray and ultrasound machines to generate medical images.
“These two new schools at the Center for Learning and Innovation will help keep Northwell’s employees on the cutting edge of developments in medical imaging, which means better outcomes for our patients,” said Michael Dowling, Northwell Health president and CEO. “Our commitment to education will help to raise health in our communities now and into the future.”
The School of Radiologic Technology offers a 24-month program that is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology and certified by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Radiologic Technology.
The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a 20-month program that consists of online courses through SUNY Empire and didactic and clinical experiences at Northwell Health facilities.
Both programs use state-of-the-art technology at Northwell’s Center for Learning and Innovation. Students will learn in new classrooms and use high-end medical equipment to simulate different scenarios and prepare them to enter the field.
