The Association of Medical Device Reprocessors (AMDR) and its members released the results of its 2025 member survey.
Among the key findings (all data for 2026):
- Members helped health systems save $495,520,878 (€421,192,746) through cost savings (reprocessed “single-use” medical devices (SUDs) cost 30 to 50% less than virgin devices) as well as from eliminated waste disposal fees.
- By using reprocessed SUDs instead of virgin materials, participating health systems and reprocessing partners reduced CO2 emissions by 125,018,466 pounds (56,707,926 kilograms), which is equivalent to eliminating 6,380,941 gallons (25,154,489 liters) of gasoline.
- A record 11,458 hospitals and surgical centers in 18 countries used devices reprocessed by AMDR members.
- The number of reprocessed devices sold grew by 8.26% in 2025, and by 23.67% over the last five years.
- Year-over-year growth for AMDR members is over 11%; for the past five years, the industry has grown 69%.
Reprocessing not only reduces costs, but it also makes the supply chain more resilient by keeping more products in a circular system, available domestically. Examples of regulated reprocessed SUDs that are labelled for “single-use” by their original manufacturer include lateral transfer mats, pulse oximeters, harmonic scalpels and EP catheters and cables.
AMDR member reprocessors sold 39,387,336 reprocessed SUDs back to hospitals and surgical facilities in 2025, according to the member survey. Sixty (60) U.S military institutions, including those that treat the President, use regulated, reprocessed SUDs. Interestingly, the U.S Veterans Health Administration refuses to use FDA regulated products, a practice that AMDR estimates wastes approximately $167 million in taxpayer dollars every year.
“By working in partnership with their hospital customers, AMDR members play a vital role in building a more resilient supply chain by keeping these devices in a circular system instead of throwing away perfectly good medical devices,” said Daniel J. Vukelich, President and CEO, Association of Medical Device Reprocessors. “When hospitals use more reprocessed devices, patients, health systems, and ultimately all of us win because of reduce cost, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions.”
Studies show that products labelled for single-use are some of the largest causes of emissions from health systems. AMDR offers a free greenhouse gas emissions calculator, which enables hospitals to quantify their emissions reductions by using reprocessed devices. The calculator uses peer reviewed data from life cycle assessments comparing the environmental impact of reprocessed SUDs to their virgin counterparts.
