Pivot Bio, a leading sustainable agriculture company, today announced its recognition by LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions as one of the world’s ten most innovative biotech startups.
The recognition comes from a comprehensive analysis of global biotechnology companies using LexisNexis’s proprietary Patent Asset Index, which measures the strength and quality of patent portfolios by combining portfolio size, technological value, and geographic scope of patent-protected inventions.
Leading biotech companies were identified for inclusion from the 38,665 private, active, for-profit biotech companies in the Crunchbase database, along with an additional 341,454 companies tagged as having biotech patents within the LexisNexis database. Companies were assessed across three key biotechnology sectors: health and medicine (red biotech), industrial applications (white biotech), and agriculture (green biotech). To qualify, companies had to be founded within the last 15 years and operate as private entities.
“This recognition validates our commitment to building breakthrough technology that transforms how agriculture approaches nitrogen management,” said Karsten Temme, co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Pivot Bio. “Our patent portfolio reflects years of scientific innovation in developing game-changing crop nutrition solutions. Being recognized alongside the world’s most innovative biotech companies demonstrates the transformative potential of our platform.”
“The world’s most innovative biotech startups walk the line between science and science fiction, as they unravel the secrets of our genetic code, create miraculous cures for intractable diseases, design and power new foods for humanity, and invent new bioalternatives to key materials and products,” said Marco Richter, Senior Director of IP Analytics and Strategy for LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions. “These startups are driving some of the most transformative innovations of our time, and their patent portfolios offer a unique window into the strength and direction of that innovation. Using the Patent Asset Index, we can objectively identify the companies that have built the patent assets that will be the foundation for future generations of biotech entrepreneurs.”
Pivot Bio’s intellectual property portfolio encompasses breakthrough innovations in microbial engineering, biological nitrogen fixation, and agricultural application methods. The company’s proprietary gene-editing techniques enable naturally occurring soil microbes to continuously produce plant-available nitrogen, even in the presence of synthetic fertilizers that would normally shut down biological nitrogen fixation.
The recognition comes as Pivot Bio continues expanding its commercial footprint and developing next-generation products for global markets. The company recently announced plans for expansion into Brazil and has established partnerships across the agricultural value chain to accelerate adoption of biological nitrogen technologies.
Traditional synthetic nitrogen fertilizer production accounts for approximately 2% of global energy consumption and contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions through both manufacturing processes and field application. Pivot Bio’s biological approach offers a permanent decarbonization solution by replacing synthetic inputs with naturally occurring biological processes that capture atmospheric nitrogen and deliver it directly to crop roots.
The company’s continued innovation has resulted in multiple product generations, including the recently launched PROVEN® G3, which offers enhanced performance across diverse growing conditions. Pivot Bio’s platform approach enables rapid development of tailored solutions for different crops and geographies while maintaining the core benefits of biological nitrogen fixation.
