Good Samaritan Medical Center announced a major advancement in minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment with the successful completion of a Focal Cryoablation using MRI overlay technology. The milestone procedure was performed by urologic surgeon Dr. Joshua S. Jue. Good Sam and Dr. Jue are the only hospital and surgeon from Orlando through Miami to perform the surgery. The procedure combined the cutting-edge precision of the KOELIS Trinity® 3D fusion platform with the power and control of the Varian CryoCare cryoablation system, in order to deliver a highly targeted treatment option designed to preserve healthy tissue and reduce treatment side effects.
Precision Fusion Technology for Personalized Treatment
The KOELIS Trinity® system enables physicians to create a real-time, patient-specific 3D prostate map using advanced ultrasound and MRI fusion. Its exclusive Organ-Based Tracking® technology helps compensate for motion and deformation, delivering millimetric accuracy for targeted procedures. The platform supports precise lesion localization, treatment planning, and continuous quality control, making it especially suited for focal therapy approaches. Pre-treatment MRI data, PSMA PET scan data, and prior biopsy data can be overlayed onto the real-time image within the operating room. This allows the surgeon to visualize the cancerous areas identified on prior imaging and biopsy during the treatment planning and delivery, in order to limit tissue destruction to the small area within the prostate previously proven to be cancerous. The fusion technology provides multiple layers of additional information to ensure that the tumor is treated, while healthy surrounding tissue is preserved.
Targeted Cryotherapy With Varian’s CryoCare System
Dr. Jue utilized the Varian CryoCare cryotherapy system as his energy source, which provides real-time monitoring, streamlined workflow, and highly customizable probe control. Varian’s V-Probes produce spherical “ice-ball” formations at lethal temperatures (down to -40°C), allowing for precise destruction of cancerous tissue. The system’s probe-integrated temperature sensors, planning software, and rapid cooling cycles contribute to safe, effective, and repeatable outcomes. The software, urethral warming catheter, and thermocouples help preserve critical structures and noncancerous prostate tissue. Overall, needles are placed through the skin to deliver the treatment, and the patient returns home the same day without any incisions or sutures.
A Meaningful Advancement for Patients
“Focal cryoablation with fusion technology represents an important step forward in personalized prostate cancer care,” said Dr. Joshua S. Jue. “By pairing the KOELIS Trinity® fusion system with Varian’s advanced cryotherapy platform, we can utilize prior imaging and biopsy data to accurately target the malignant prostate tumor, which often only measures 1-2cm in size. This is a major advancement from focal therapy treatments that usually destroy of 25-75% of the prostate gland, since thespecific area of cancer detected on prior biopsy cannot easily be localized during the treatment.”
Strengthening Urologic Care in Palm Beach County
“This milestone reflects the expertise of our physicians and the investments we continue to make in advanced technology,” said Sheri Montgomery, CEO of Good Samaritan Medical Center. “We are committed to bringing leading-edge, patient-centered treatments to our community, ensuring that individuals have access to innovative care close to home.”
