The American Academy of Nursing (Academy) will honor Marion E. Broome, Peter Buerhaus, Jennie Chin Hansen, Linda Burnes Bolton, and Bonnie and Mark Barnes with awards during the 2022 Health Policy Conference, From Reflection to Impact: Positioning Nursing’s Future, being held October 27-29, 2022 in Washington, DC for their longstanding contributions to improve care, advance health equity, and promote the nursing profession.
“These remarkable individuals have, in their own way, contributed to elevating the voice of the profession in policy, practice, and through purposeful recognition. Their years of servant leadership has been an inspiration to many and all award designees have provided invaluable contributions to the organization,” said Academy President Kenneth R. White, PhD, RN, AGACNP, ACHPN, FACHE, FAAN. “It is an honor to award each of them and demonstrate the Academy’s gratitude for their outstanding work. It is a privilege to highlight their dedication to improving health and care for all.”
he President’s Award, which recognizes an individual who has made extraordinary, lifelong contributions to improving the health of individuals, families, or communities, will be presented to Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, Ruby F. Wilson Professor of Nursing and former Dean for Duke University School of Nursing. This is the highest individual achievement award given by the Academy and only awarded when someone has been identified as being truly fitting of the honor. Widely regarded as an expert, scholar, and leader in pediatric nursing research and practice, Dr. Broome’s work has been funded by the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and various foundations for over two decades. Her seminal research developed and tested interventions designed to assist children to cope with acute and chronic pain, review informed consent and assent for children in research, investigate research misconduct in clinical trials and, most recently, Dr. Broome has considered ethical dilemmas in publishing and leadership of nurse executives. Of note, Dr. Broome served as the Editor-in-Chief of Nursing Outlook, the Academy’s official journal for nearly 20 years.
Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAANP(h), FAAN, Professor of Nursing and Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Workforce Studies at the College of Nursing, Montana State University, will be presented with this Academy’s Civitas Award. The award recognizes an individual who exemplifies extraordinary dedication to excellence in promoting quality care. Dr. Buerhaus is a prolific writer and healthcare economist, known for his research on the nursing workforce in the United States. His research program focuses on employment, education, and demographic trends in the nursing workforce, forecasting nurse and physician workforce supply, developing and testing measures of hospital quality of care, determining public and provider opinions on the delivery of health care, and assessing the quantity, quality, and costs of health care provided by nurse practitioners. Among his 170 publications, five publications are designated as “Classics” by the Federal Government’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. In 2003, Dr. Buerhaus was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and he served on NAM’s Committee on the Future of Nursing 2020-2030.
The Health Care Leader Award, created in 2008 to recognize an influential national leader dedicated to improving the health of the nation through contributions to organizational excellence, will be given to Jennie Chin Hansen, DNS(h), MSN, RN, FAAN, immediate past CEO of the American Geriatrics Society and former President of AARP. Ms. Hansen is a dedicated advocate for the care of older adults, including through the current establishment of Geriatric Emergency Departments in San Francisco. Throughout her 25-year career at the original Program of All Inclusive Care to the Elderly (PACE) program in San Francisco, she led, operated, and replicated the first ever integrated and comprehensive health care and community-based services to older adults who are qualified to be in nursing homes. Solidifying Ms. Hansen’s legacy was advancement of this original project to become PACE, which is now a federally established Medicare benefit and operates in 31 states in the United States. In addition, Ms. Hansen serves/has served in numerous advisory positions to ensure access and quality to care for this population including as a federal commissioner to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), an advisor on the Geriatrics Measures Advisory Group within the National Committee for Quality Assurance, the California Governor’s Commission on Healthy California for All and as a stakeholder to the first ever created California MasterPlan for Aging.
The Academy will present Linda Burnes Bolton, DrPH, RN, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer Emeritus, Cedars Sinai, with the Lifetime Legacy Award. Created in 2019, this award recognizes an extraordinary individual who has dedicated their life to advocating for positive health system changes. Dr. Burnes Bolton was the inaugural holder of the James R. Klinenberg, MD, and Lynn Klinenberg-Linkin Chair in Nursing, when she joined Cedars-Sinai in 1971 and held numerous leadership positions including Senior Vice President and Chief Health Equity Officer. Throughout her career, Dr. Burnes Bolton has impacted health care policy, clinical practice, and patient care nationally while elevating the role and professional training of nurses. Her influence is seen through her numerous leadership positions, including serving as former President of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (now American Organization of Nurse Leaders), the National Black Nurses Association, and the American Academy of Nursing. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), chair of the RWJF National Advisory Committee for Transforming Care at the Bedside and Veteran Affairs Commission on Nursing, and Vice-Chair of the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the Institute of Medicine.
Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, and Mark Barnes, FAAN, Co-Founders and leaders within the DAISY Foundation, will be presented with the Outstanding Leadership Award. This distinction recognizes Honorary Fellows of the Academy for exemplary service and perseverance as a champion of the nursing profession. The DAISY Foundation and DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses was created to recognize and honor the compassionate care nurses provide every day to the patients they serve. Inspired by the extraordinary nursing care their family and son, Patrick, experienced during his battle with a fatal autoimmune disease, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, the foundation was established. Today, it is celebrated in over 5,400 healthcare facilities and nursing schools in 34 countries. Each DAISY Award® nomination, nearly 2.5 million to date, tells the story of extraordinary compassion and care provided by a nurse to their patient.
