Want to have healthy teeth and gums? Oral health issues such as gum disease are caused by the build-up of plaque and tartar in the mouth. Plaque is a sticky deposit over the teeth. It consists of mucus, food debris, bacteria and other particles. If this isn’t removed it will harden to become tartar. Bacteria thrive in tartar. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the bacteria that thrive in tartar and plaque are the leading cause of gum disease and other oral health issues. Below we will discuss how to keep your teeth healthy.

How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

·         Prevention

Good teeth hygiene is the foundation for healthy gums and teeth. It is the best way to prevent oral health issues. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day to prevent cavities, gum infections as well as tooth loss.

In order to brush correctly, you must invest in a soft-bristles toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. For best results and if you can afford it, you should use an electric toothbrush. Brush in the morning and in the evening before going to sleep. Brush the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth as well as the chewing surface. Replace your toothbrush as soon as it begins to fray or at least every 3 to 4 months. You should also replace your toothbrush after you have had strep throat, a cold or other such infections.

·         Floss daily

Plaque and tartar can still build up even with regular and thorough brushing of teeth. This brushing does not get rid of all bacteria and food debris in the mouth. For example, food can get stuck between the teeth and close to the gums. Flossing daily helps to get rid of these food particles

Invest in floss and make sure that you floss at least once a day in the evening before you sleep. Ensure the floss reaches the gum lie when flossing. Be careful not to damage the gum while flossing. Rub gently using the floss string to remove any food debris between the teeth.

If flossing is too tedious for you, the best dentist in Syracuse recommends interdental brushes instead.

·         Watch What You Eat

The foods you eat play an important role in the health of your gums and teeth. Choosing the right foods can help to prevent tooth decays and other oral health issues. Eating too many of the wrong kinds of foods can be detrimental to the health of your teeth and gums.

Avoid eating sweets as the high sugar content encourages the proliferation of bacteria in the mouth. You should especially avoid sticky sweets such as soft candies, pastries and taffies. If you do eat sweets, be sure to brush your teeth immediately. If you’re unable to do so, give your mouth a rinse with water. You can opt for sugar-free gum to ease your sweet tooth.

Increase your intake of foods such as cheese, milk and yogurt that are rich in calcium. Calcium is essential for maintaining the bone in which the teeth’s roots are embedded. It is especially important in younger children undergoing development as well as older adults experiencing deterioration of the bones.

·         See Your Dentist At Least Twice a Year

It is recommended that you see a dentist at least twice a year for a checkup. These visits will help to identify any oral health issues and ensure the dentist deals with them before they become serious.
