PEOPLE Magazine Names Northwell Health to Companies that Care List

Editor: What To Know

  • “It means so much to us to have this incredible and prestigious light shone on the relationship we have with our team members – a relationship anchored in caring, inclusion, trust and shared commitment to mission,” said Maxine Carrington, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Northwell.
  • Companies are assessed on how well they are creating a great employee experience that cuts across race, gender, age, disability status or any aspect of who employees are or what their role is.
  • “As a recognized leader in health and well-being and consistent with our mission, we believe in caring for the ‘whole person' and that focus extends to our patients and customers, communities and our entire workforce.

Northwell Health has been recognized as a 2021 PEOPLE Companies that Care organization, a ranking based on employee surveys compiled by Great Place to Work® and PEOPLE magazine. Northwell placed 54th on the list, one of nine health systems nationally to be honored.

The Companies that Care award is based on survey responses from more than 5 million employees derived from 60 employee experience questions at organizations nationwide. In that survey, 84 percent of Northwell’s employees validated it as a great place to work. More than 90 percent of those surveyed said they felt good about the ways Northwell contributed to the community. This is Northwell’s first appearance on the list, which reflects the health system’s employee experience as a measure of success.

Great Place to Work is the only company culture award in America that selects winners based on how fairly employees are treated. Companies are assessed on how well they are creating a great employee experience that cuts across race, gender, age, disability status or any aspect of who employees are or what their role is.

“It means so much to us to have this incredible and prestigious light shone on the relationship we have with our team members – a relationship anchored in caring, inclusion, trust and shared commitment to mission,” said Maxine Carrington, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Northwell. “As a recognized leader in health and well-being and consistent with our mission, we believe in caring for the ‘whole person’ and that focus extends to our patients and customers, communities and our entire workforce. It is reflected in our culture and in the programs and services we have invested in throughout the years to support our team members’ career and well-being journey.”

In April, Northwell Health was named to Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the second year in a row, ranking 19th. With a workforce of more than 76,000 based at 23 hospitals and 830 outpatient facilities throughout New York City, Long Island and Westchester County, Northwell was selected from among thousands of companies nationwide.

Northwell garnered employee praise during one of the most challenging episodes health care has seen in the last century. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has fundamentally changed the face of critical and long-term care as well as taxed health workers to the limit. No health system in New York treated more hospitalized COVID patients and Northwell led the way by bringing care into underserved communities where the virus hit hardest, providing medical care, testing and vaccinations.

In turn, Northwell provided COVID testing, housing, transportation and child care support to team members who needed it. The health system also created the Northwell Caregiver Support Fund to provide financial assistance. It has disbursed nearly $500,000 to date. Separately, the Northwell Heroes Memorial Fund has raised nearly $350,000 to support families of staff lost to the virus.

“When you put people first, the results show,” said Michael Dowling, Northwell’s president and CEO. “Northwell Health’s mission is to strengthen the health and well-being of the communities we serve. This mission fuels our culture of care, empowers our team members and naturally makes this a great place to work and a company that cares.”
