AAOS Announces 2021 MORE Award Recipients

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Media Orthopaedic Reporting Excellence (MORE) Awards. Presented annually to U.S.-based journalists, the MORE Awards acknowledge accurate reporting of musculoskeletal health news topics and celebrate the role media play in accurately educating and informing patients about musculoskeletal health issues, innovative bone and joint treatments, preventative care and patient recovery.

Entries were judged by a panel of orthopaedic surgeons and evaluated for overall quality and medical accuracy. The winners of the 2021 awards include health and medical writers, photographers and freelance reporters from print, broadcast and online media outlets. From heart-warming patient stories to perspectives on orthopaedic innovations and treatment options, the award recipients covered an array of bone and joint-health topics.

“Having trusted sources of information that increase the public’s knowledge of bone and joint conditions and issues that impact patient care is important,” said Daniel K. Guy, MD, FAAOS, AAOS President. “We gratefully acknowledge the media’s commitment to delivering compelling and accurate reporting. The AAOS is honored to sponsor the MORE Awards, a long-standing program that recognizes the positive impact that journalism plays in sharing stories of patients’ perseverance and their successes.”

Dr. Sachita Shah, Sr. Director, Global Health, Butterfly Network, "Butterfly is proud to continue improving maternal health equity through Phase Two of the largest-scale handheld ultrasound distribution and training ever conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa. South Africa is an emerging market that continues to have disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality and stillbirth. Patients need easier access to antenatal imaging, and clinicians need better capabilities for screening high-risk conditions that lead to disproportionately worse pregnancy outcomes in rural areas in the public sector. Together with CHAI and GUSI, we can tackle this by making ultrasound much more accessible, so high-risk conditions can be identified earlier in care, which is known to improve outcomes.”

Dr. Michael Newman, Indaptus’ Founder, Chief Scientific Officer, and lead author, commented, “The new data are consistent with our preclinical animal tumor model studies and provide evidence for our hypothesis that patented Decoy bacteria can activate a wide range of innate and adaptive human immune cells involved in fighting tumors.  This aligns with what we’ve observed in our ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial of Decoy20 – broad immune activation, as evidenced by transiently increased levels of many key cytokines and chemokines following single dose administration. These findings bolster our confidence in Decoy20's potential as a multifaceted immunotherapy.”
